Nude’s not rude. – The Nude Edit.
Steady, we’re not talking naked selfies here, but Nude is indeed a thing right now. It’s subtle, yet very attention grabbing, the simple strikingness of a woman doing the Nude thing. By Nude, to avoid all doubt I mean the colour nude, or all the shades of colour within what is generally considered to make up the nude palette, the beiges, the creams, the stones etc. When done right, it isn’t trashy, in fact it rarely comes across that way. Using the nude colour palette tends to hint at your femininity, suggest your outline, in a tasteful non brash way. Nude needn’t be rude.
I once had a friend who turned up for lunch in head to toe nude, I may have shouted something along the lines of “**** me , it’s Pauline Fowler”, which is why I no longer do more than one glass of Prosecco before a meal, (she was running late) linking my friend to the queen of beige wasn’t very complimentary, but in years gone by, beige clothes, nude clothes, were generally for the very boring safe brigade, and in my defence she’d done a very bad job of it. Nude is no longer boring or safe, and she is no longer my friend! My how times change.
As a female of colour, I spent many years questioning where’s my nude range then? when browsing high street shops, but generally have come to accept that if I want nude, say, in tights, I’m going for ‘Barely Black’…which is in my opinion the worst colour ever (note to all tights manufacturers), it is always a last resort when you go into all those high street stores that seem to have rows and rows of that as opposed to black or a decent brown. But to be fair, when it comes to actual clothes, many of the stones, creams, beiges, all the nude palette, looks pretty stunning on brown skin too.
But on to Nude as we know it. It is often utilised to convey a kind of, ease, luxurious soft and gentle vibe. Classy, elegant, and generally unfussy in it’s subtlety. Whatever the fashions of the moment, there is usually always some nude section within a store, and at this time of year, on those rare days with a burst of sunlight, be it actually warm, or just that kind of cold crisp but sunny day, nude can be a welcome relief to our usual wardrobe staples.
The simple nude blouse in silk or something sheer with a hint of accessorised underwear, nude killer heels or flats, and best of all, who doesn’t look at every celebrity snap in some luxurious shade of nude coat, think Kim Kardashian and lots of Max Mara, and feel complete envy? Don’t we all want to be that girl, that can carry that look off that screams your life style is so fantastic and luxurious you can and will wear those colours, to hell with the dry cleaning bill.
For me, there’s probably far too much brown foundation in my life for those luxury coats, but I fantasise none the less, and I’m thinking, with a great scarf, might be able to pull it off, come pay day, maybe. Then I remember I have children…ok, maybe after the school run, I could put on my wonderful Nude Coat when sticky felt-tipped hands are no where near me? Hmm, time to earn more money so I can say “to hell with the cleaning bill” too, bring on the nudes.
Here are some of the current High Street offerings for all you Nudies out there:
